What is silk and why should we sleep on it?

Silk is one of the strongest natural fibers, known for it’s luster, shine, strength and durability but most of all silk is world renowned as the touch of luxury. It’s soft feel, elegant appearance and high cost to produce have made it the most luxurious textile.

At 8hrS we don’t settle for just the sense of luxury, we truly  deep dived in the world of silk to source the very best silk available. Let us explain a little bit about different kinds of silk and why we chose to work with a 100% 25 momme Mulberry Silk.

China, the home of silk was known to the ancient Greeks and Romans as “Seres” the Land of the Silk. Sericulture, or silk making includes that cultivation of Mulberry Trees, who are local to China. The harvest of the trees form the sole nutrition of the silk worm, resulting in the highest quality silk available for purchase. This 100% Mulberry silk is 100% natural, odorless and hypoallergenic. Mulberry silk is coated with sericin, a protein that makes them antibacterial, antifungal and resistant to dust mites and mold. These qualities are the first reason 100% mulberry silk is a fantastic fabric for bedding and pillow cases.

Momme is the Japanese word used as a unit of weight measurement for real silk. Momme is often abbreviated as mm and is defined as the weight in pounds of a piece of facric sized 45 inches x 100 yards. the higher the momme, the heavier and denser the silk will be. There are a lot of “silk” pillow cases out there, some of them containing very little actual silk fiber. Silk starts to feel silky and luxurious starting at 19 momme, but after careful testing and sampling we chose a supplier who could give us the very best. Resulting in the most luxurious and silky pillowcase we could find, our 8hrS pillow cases have no less than 25 momme! To be able to put your head on such a rich and silky textile at night will make you look forward to bed and create a better, happier start of your 8hrS.

So now you know that the 8hrS pillow cases are the best silk pillow cases you’ll find, it’s time to talk about why you should sleep on silk to begin with. Apart from the sheer luxurious feel it’ll give your night. Sleeping on silk has so many advantages it’ll give you a head start once you wake up.

The silky texture has less friction on your skin and hair so prevents irritation of the skin or damaging the hair. You’ll wake up with a headstart since you won’t have to tame your bedhead or iron out bed wrinkles. Additionally, normal cotton pillow cases soak up natural oil and bacteria from your face and hair crating a petri dish out of your cotton pillow. Silk pillowcases absorb less moisture from your hair and skin, not only keeping the oils in your hair and skin keeping them hydrated but also keep your skin clean which is great for sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Silk has a unique fiber structure with a hollow core, this gives silk the ability to breathe and regulate body temperature. This means silk is a comfortable to sleep on in both warm and cold weather. As said earlier, the sericin makes silk pillow cases hypoallergenic, making them a great option for people with seasonal or environment allergies.

In short, sleeping on silk will makes your nights ànd days better. And that is exactly why we want you to sleep on silk.
